Disneyland & Walt Disney World Announces the Removal of Splash Mountain to be Replaced by Princess and the Frog | Here’s What we Know

Splash Mountain recently came under fire due to the ‘Song of the South’s’ racist past which the attraction is loosely based off of. Some fans of the theme parks demanded that the ride’s theme be changed to something else. One of these ideas being the Princess and the Frog, well today Disney has officially announced that the Princess and the Frog will in fact be replacing the Splash Mountain water ride at both Magic Kingdom in Florida and Disneyland in California sometime in the near future.

The story line of the attraction takes place right after the final kiss from the film. Both Princess Tiana and Louis invite guests to join them on their musical adventure as they prepare for their first ever Mardi Gras performance. The re-imagination will incorporate some of the most popular songs from the film to bring the flume ride to life. Throughout this adventure we will see tons of characters from the film that we know and love. Although all the details are not known yet, fans can expect to see animatronics, special effects, new technology, and much more. The new ride does not yet have a date as to when it will start construction but our best guess is it will open sometime in the Summer of 2021.

A couple things that should be noted about this new announcement is the fact that the ride will now take a very New Orleans type of theme to it which is ironic considering the fact that New Orleans Square is directly next to the location of Splash Mountain. This begs the question whether or not ‘Critter Country’ will stay the same or will the New Orleans Square area just take over that whole area. Both Hungry Bear Restaurant and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh won’t fit the theme when the Princess and the Frog overlay is complete so it will be interesting to see what Disney decides to do with that area. Legendary Disney imagineer Tony Baxter will be apart of the team that is bringing this ride to life.
